Alaska Air Group, the SeaTac-based airline holding company that owns Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, says its passenger traffic increased for both December and for 2012.

Revenue passenger miles (one paying passenger carried one mile) increased 8.1 percent in December, according to Alaska. For the year, RPMs rose by 7.9 percent.

During 2012′s last month, available seat miles, a measure of capacity, were 9 percent higher than in the same month in 2011. For the entire year, available seat miles rose by 6.1 percent.

Those figures translated to slightly less crowded planes in December with 85.7 percent of seats filled compared with 86.4 percent of seats filled a year earlier in December.

For the full year, the two airlines collectively filled 85.9 percent of their seats compared with 84.5 percent in 2011.
