Port of Tacoma facilities undermined by high tides and wave action shortly before Christmas have been repaired under an emergency authorization from the port’s chief executive.
The bank erosion undermined part of the port headquarters parking lot and the Olympic Container Terminal on the Sitcum Waterway and the shoreline at the port’s Earley Business Center on the Blair Waterway.
The repairs involved replacing fill washed away be the storm action and reinstalling rock riprap to protect that fill from further erosion.
The erosion had exposed the pipes leading to a fire hydrant and undercut the foundation of a power facility at the business center.
State law allowed Wolfe to authorize the emergency repairs without taking bids because of the danger that a delay in getting the repairs done could allow further damage to the shorelines.
The repairs cost the port some $52,000, said port spokeswoman Tara Mattina.
