A $6 billion order for 60 Boeing 737 Max aircraft from Aviation Capital Group takes that latest version of the popular 737 over the 1,000-order mark in a little more than a year since Boeing put it on the market.
ACG consists of 50 737 Max 8s and 10 737 Max 9s. The Max 8 is the medium-sized member of the 737 Max family of aircraft. The Max 9 is the largest of the three versions of the plane.
While the order’s announcement was made today, Boeing said it completed the paperwork on the order during December adding the 60 planes to Boeing’s 2012 total. Boeing expects to top its rival, Airbus, in orders in 2012 for the first time in several years.
“This order is a major step in building our broad portfolio of modern, fuel-efficient airplanes,” said Denis Kalscheur, chief executive officer of ACG. “The 737 MAX enables us to offer our customers airplanes that provide the fuel efficiency, reliability and passenger comforts needed to grow in tomorrow’s marketplace.”
“We are proud of the confidence that ACG has placed in the 737 MAX,” said John Wojick, senior vice president of global sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 737 MAX will deliver to ACG’s customers unsurpassed efficiency in the single-aisle market as well as improved environmental performance.”
Boeing now lists 1,029 orders for the 737 Max family of planes. All of those aircraft are scheduled to be built in Boeing’s Renton plant.
The 737 Max is the fourth generation of the 737, the world’s best-selling jet airliner. The first of Max series is scheduled to enter airline service in 2017.
The plane will feature new fuel-efficient engines and aerodynamic refinements such as split wingtips and wind-cheating navigation lights. Boeing claims the planes will be 13 percent more fuel-efficient than the existing series of Boeing 737s.
