A Boeing plane whose basic design is 30 years old, continues to tote up orders.
Package delivery giant FedEx today announced orders for four more of the twin-jet, wide-bodied freighter aircraft.
That order raises FedEx’s outstanding orders for the 767-300F to 46. The Memphis-based express company ordered 27 of the planes a year ago and then added 15 more in July.
The company also has 11 orders on the books for Boeing 777 freighters.
In the passenger business, Boeing last year delivered its first 787 Dreamliner, a same-sized plane as the 767 that was designed to be some 20 percent more efficient. But airlines ordering the 787 face a years-long wait to receive the 787. Some have opted to order the 767 instead.
The twin-engine jet is also the base aircraft for the Air Force’s new airborne tanker. The Pentagon has ordered 179 of those planes with the prospect of selling dozens more to the Air Force and to foreign countries.
Boeing builds the 767 at its Everett factory.
“These additional 767 orders will help accelerate our fleet modernization program as we replace our aging MD-10 freighter fleet,” said James R. Parker, FedEx Express executive vice president, air operations. “These new 767s will provide significantly improved reliability and are substantially more fuel-efficient than the aircraft they will replace. They will be an excellent addition to the FedEx fleet.”
The 767 Freighter is based on the popular 767-300ER (extended range) passenger airplane. The plane is able to carry approximately 58 tons of revenue cargo with intercontinental range.
Including the new FedEx planes, Boeing is reporting 70 unfilled 767 orders including 12 of the passenger version of the plane. Those numbers don’t include the tanker aircraft.
