New competitor spurs fare war on Seattle-Anchorage route

A new competitor in the Seattle-Anchorage air route has spurred a fare war among itself and two incumbent carriers.

JetBlue Airways is beginning seasonal service May 17 to Anchorage to Seattle. Some seats are available for as little as $117 each way. That’s about half the normal fare.

The route’s two existing carriers, Alaska Airlines and United Airlines, have matched those fares.

There’s one catch, however, JetBlue is flying only late at night or in the post-midnight morning hours. The matching fares are for flights at comparable hours on the rival airlines.
