Hurricane Sandy: Red Cross benefits from KeyBank commitment to safe deposit box rentals

Daniel Dyck, a teller at the Willows KeyBank branch in Puyallup, heard how people on the Eastern Seaboard were having difficulty recovering from a pummeling from Hurricane Sandy.

Not only had many lost their homes, but they had also lost valuable documents – insurance policies, tax records, deeds – that would help them recover from the disaster.

If only they had placed those documents in safe deposit boxes, Dyck thought. “I wanted to come up with a way to help my clients understand that a safe deposit box could save them a lot of heartache if their homes were destroyed in a natural disaster.”

Many people, Dyck said, think of safe deposit boxes as “things their grandparents used.” Now, he says, he realizes how wrong that is. “All my papers are in a safe deposit box these days.”

And between now and Jan. 31. 2013, KeyBank will contribute $5 to the Mt. Rainier Chapter of the American Red Cross for every safe deposit opened at any one of 62 branches in the South Sound.

Leilani Prather, KeyBank district operations leader, said she will be spreading Dyck’s idea throughout the KeyBank network, which means that it could be implemented by over 1,000 branches in 14 states.
