South Sound gas prices, which have enjoyed a six-week fall, appear to have stabilized around $3.40 a gallon.

The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder reports average prices for unleaded regular in the Tacoma area were $3.401 a gallon in mid-afternoon today. That’s 1.2 cents more than the average a week ago.

The Tacoma-area price is just above the national average of $3.387 a gallon.

Typically gas prices hit their yearly low just before Christmas each year and then gradually rise until Memorial Day when they decline slightly and stabilize for the summer before heading downward in September.

This year has been atypical with high prices in early spring, a decline and then $4-plus prices on Memorial Day.

Prices declined and then rose again in September before finally beginning the usual fall decline about six weeks late.

A gas war continues in Bonney Lake where the Safeway is posting the area’s lowest gas prices at $3.09 a gallon.

In Thurston County, the lowest prices are somewhat higher. An Arco station at Martin Way East and Ranger Drive was posting the lowest price at $3.27 a gallon.
