Blue Mouse Theatre finding funding to convert to digital; donations to Kickstarter.com

Forget film.

The future is consuming the past as community movie theaters across the country are faced with conversion from 35mm film to digital projection. No longer will distributors send those bulky canisters of celluloid. Beginning next year, it’s all about electrons.

Tacoma’s Blue Mouse Theatre – a daily cinema staple in the Proctor District for 89 years – has found a novel way to pay for this conversion. In order to raise the necessary funds, the theater has gone onto Kickstarter.com.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kickstarter.com – it’s an easy way to help fund an artistic or entrepreneurial cause. You visit the site, find the project, read the pitch and then give a donation. If the project reaches its stated goal (in this case, $75,000) then the money is sent. If not, then not.

As of Tuesday morning, the Blue Mouse conversion had received $10,341 from 168 backers.

So why bother?

Here’s this, from the Kickstarter.com pitch: “The Blue Mouse does not have the ability to finance this major capital expenditure out of its annual earnings. Our best option is to ask you, our loyal Blue Mouse patrons and the community to help us keep our doors open by making a contribution toward this historical transition. This change will ensure the same quality of programming and allow us to continue offering the latest movies.”

And this, from Bill Evans, owner of the nearby Pacific Northwest Shop and one of 17 owners (and saviors) of the Blue Mouse: “It takes a real community effort to keep a community theater alive. We just can’t lose this.”
