Free samples, a look back: Brown & Haley celebrates 100 years this Saturday

There had been no world wars, no CIA scandals, in 1912. There was no Narrows Bridge, no Interstate 5, no UWT.

But there was a sweet partnership called Brown & Haley. The Tacoma confectioner – home to the Roca family and the Mountain Bar – celebrates its centenary this year, along with another international Tacoma staple, Roman Meal.

For the candymaker, save some time this Saturday for a chance to travel back 100 years.

At the company’s Fife retail store, look for what marketing manager Kathi Rennaker calls “a fun party.” That means free samples, plus free gifts with a purchase, plus price rollbacks to the 1970s on some items.

And there will be a chance to meet Brown & Haley’s Roca chefs, plus free tours of the Roca Museum – and a look at company packaging and advertising over the past century.

Remember Rugged Bar, Yankee Doodle, Totem Pole, Maple Gems, Army & Navy Bar, Skookum Bar, Moonshine, Humpty Dumpty?

And beyond the past, the present will be represented by this year’s special collectible holiday Nutcracker tin, and the centennial tin – which sold out at the company’s Puyallup Fair display. Add samples of the newest addition to the Roca family: dark chocolate peppermint.

“Brown & Haley has been a part of the fabric of Tacoma and Pierce County for 100 years,” said company President and CEO Pierson Clair on Wednesday. “The families and individuals of our community have supported us through World War I, The Great Depression, World War II, the Great Recession, and we are most thankful.”

Clair continued, “We were delighted with the 180,000 people who came through our display at the Puyallup Fair in September. We would now like to continue this celebration on Saturday.”

The store is located at 3500 20th St. E. in Fife. The party begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs through 5 p.m., with the majority of festivities between 11 and 3.

There should be enough candy to go around.

Clair said Brown & Haley currently produces 65,000 pounds.
