A hand-held exhibition of Tacoma art can be yours for only $20, starting next Friday.

The back of the Tacoma Playing Cards

That’s when the deck of Tacoma Playing Cards, the first project of Tacoma Makes, will arrive and be celebrated at a party at downtown’s Amocat Cafe.

Tacoma Makes is the brainchild of local arts advocates Maija McKnight and Amy McBride. They used an online fundraising tool this summer to raise money for its first project: a deck of playing cards that features the work of 14 local artists interpreting the story of Tacoma.

The women’s fundraising goal was $13,000, to cover the cost of printing 2,500 decks and to pay the artists a modest fee. They ended up blowing past that, raising $21,532 and printing 5,000 decks.

On Oct. 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., everyone is invited to Amocat Cafe, 625 St. Helens, to meet the artists, see and buy the original artwork, buy some cards and enjoy snacks and a no-host bar.

The cards will go on sale in November at local retailers, including downtown’s LeMay and Tacoma Art museums, the Pacific Northwest Shop, Throwing Mud Gallery and Watermark Gifts. A store in Manchester, United Kingdom, will be selling them, too. A list of all retailers is available here.

To see each card (which you really should do), go to and click on “shop”. There you can click through the whole deck, as well as see the original artwork also for sale.
