The Machinists Union is making a new effort to organize workers at Boeing’s new South Carolina fabrication and assembly plants.
Reuters reports the union is sending leaflets to Boeing workers at its North Charleston plants and holding meetings at local venues.
The decision by workers at Boeing’s South Carolina fabrication plants to decertify the union in 2009 is credited by some with attracting Boeing’s second 787 Dreamliner assembly line to the state.
South Carolina is one of more than two dozen “right to work” states in the country where union organizing faces an uphill battle.
Boeing contends its workers don’t need a union to represent their interests in South Carolina.
The Machinists, Boeing’s largest union at its Puget Sound-area assembly and parts plants, face the threat of Boeing moving more work to the non-union South unless the workers there organize and demand similar wages and benefits as the Puget Sound workers receive.
Spirit Aerosystems, which built a composites fabrication plant at Kinston, N.C., soon faces a vote whether workers there will unionize. Spirit, which bought former Boeing factories in Kansas, is still union there.
