Gas once again below $4

After an almost three-week-long excursion to the world of $4-plus gas prices, South Sound petrol prices are once again below that mark.

The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder reports the average price of gas in the Tacoma area today is $3.982 a gallon. The last time that average price was below $4 was Sept. 29.

Today’s price was down 3.1 cents a gallon from Wednesday’s average price.

The price here still has a long way to fall before it hits the summertime low of $3.48 a gallon. That price occurred in mid-July.

Northwest gas prices have swung up and down steeply this year. After a fire at the state’s largest refinery in February, prices passed $4 in early spring, fell moderately in April and then took off again in May hitting $4.32 a gallon on Memorial Day weekend.

Those prices descended steeply through mid-July and then moved upward until mid-September, fell again briefly and then started upward again until the last few days.

The least expensive gas in the Tacoma area was reported at a Chevron at Lakewood Drive and 74th Street West where the price today was $3.75 a gallon.
