Alaska Air broadens network with San Diego-Orlando flight

SeaTac-based Alaska Airlines further broadened its repertoire of flights from San Diego this week with a new overnight flight to Orlando.

The flight, which leave San Diego at 10:35 p.m., will arrive in Orlando at 6:30 a.m. five days a week. The flight will leave San Diego Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The return flight leaves Orlando at 8:05 a.m. and arrives back in San Diego at 10:40 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

San Diego was the largest underserved market from Orlando before the Alaska flights began.

Orlando is the tenth destination Alaska is serving from San Diego as the airline seeks to increase its market share from the Southern California airport.

Alaska has added four new destinations from San Diego this year.

The Puget Sound-headquartered carrier now serves Seattle, Portland, Honolulu, Maui and Orlando as well as Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico and Santa Rosa, Fresno and Monterey in California from San Diego non-stop.

Alaska had sought Department of Transportation permission to fly from Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport to San Diego, but the DOT selected didn’t pick San Diego as one of the cities for long distance connections to the close-in airport. Alaska, however, won the right to fly between Reagan and Portland.

US Airways began flying the route last summer after it gave up a slot to Dallas-Fort Worth in exchange for the right to serve San Diego from Reagan instead.
