Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber planning intense new-member effort

The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber is trying a new tack to rev up interest in the area’s largest business advocacy organization.

Calling it a “membership event,” it’s essentially a membership drive taking place over two days. Nine community and business leaders have volunteered to lead the event. Each of them will recruit five team captains. Those captains then will form teams of five people, who each go through their personal and professional networks to persuade non-members to join.

The goal is up to 200 new members, said Chamber membership outreach manager Lynnette Buffington. Everyone will get together Oct. 23 and 24 at Cheney Stadium to hit the phones.

“We’re not selling participation in socials. We’re selling the collective voice of business,” Buffington said.

The Chamber has about 1,270 members now, she said. At its highest point, it was 2,200, and the organization is striving to return to that level.

During the membership event, new members won’t be offered a discount, she said. Regular dues are based on a member’s full-time employee count.

The event is “a three-part booster shot for Chambers: it will increase membership numbers, increase membership dollars and increase the volume of the voice as an organization.”
