Rainier Connect Internet slowdown also tied to Sprint

An Internet slowdown that affected hundreds of Rainier Connect communications customers Monday was caused by an issue with a Sprint fiber optic cable, a Rainier Connect spokesperson said Monday.

Debbie Reding, Rainier Connect sales and marketing manager, said Sprint was working to repair the cable break. Rainier Connect provides phone, Internet and cable services in Pierce County and in the business cores of Centralia and Chehalis.

Some Pierce County Rainier Connect customers reported their Internet connection slowed down or was unable to connect with certain sites Monday morning.

Sprint said a cable break occurred early Monday between Seattle and Portland. That cable break affected Pacific Northwest customers.

Meanwhile a construction error severed a Sprint cable between Milwaukee and Chicago. The two breaks were responsible for a computer network outage that crippled Alaska Airlines’ reservations and check-in system and forced the cancellations of 53 flights Monday.

The airline’s service was restored about noon Monday, but the airline’s passengers may require several days to find other routes to their destinations because Alaska typically operates with few empty seats.

The airline has waived change fees for flights made through Monday for flights that are completed by Oct. 22.
