Next week, more than a dozen parks will sprout up all over downtown Tacoma.

On Friday, Sept. 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 18 local businesses and organizations will show their creative side by turning parking spaces into places filled with people, plants, music, art, and games as part of Park(ing) Day, an international event.

Sponsored in Tacoma by Downtown on the Go, Park(ing) Day was started in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio. It wanted to call attention to the need for more urban open space, according to a news release, and to challenge people to rethink the way streets are used.

Tour Tacoma’s downtown parks by participating in a noon walk led by Downtown On the Go, and vote for your favorite “park” in downtown.  The walking tour is scheduled from noon to 1:00 p.m., starting at the top of the UWT stairs on S. 19th and Jefferson.
