Unemployment rate for Pierce County at 9 percent in July, state figures show

Pierce County’s unemployment rate inched higher in July, rising to 9 percent last month from a revised rate of 8.9 percent in June, the state Employment Security Department announced Tuesday.

Although the county’s jobless rate rose in July, it remains lower than then 9.7 percent jobless rate reported in July 2011, Employment Security data show. Seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment was 8.5 percent last month.

Thurston County’s jobless rate also was marginally higher in July, increasing to 7.8 percent from a revised 7.6 percent rate in June. County jobless numbers, unlike the statewide figure, are not seasonally adjusted.

Regional jobless rates for July:

  • Kitsap County: 7.4 percent.
  • Thurston County: 7.8 percent.
  • King County (Seattle, Bellevue): 8.1 percent.
  • Pierce County: 9 percent.
  • Mason County: 10.3 percent.
  • Lewis County: 12.3 percent.
  • Grays Harbor County: 12.4 percent.
