Harland Clarke Holdings, a national check check printing and banking service technology provider, will close its Milton printing facility starting this fall, according to the state Employment Security Department.

About 35 employees will be laid off, the company reported to the state. The layoffs will happen between Oct. 9 and March 30.

The check printing business is declining as people use electronic payment systems and credit and debit cards to pay bills and expenses.

In February 2011, the company laid off 53 people, but about 100 employees remained at that time. Harland Clarke opened the Milton facility in 2001.
