Auburn Regional Medical Center transition to MultiCare set for Oct. 1

A state Department of Employment Security warning notice that notified the public today that Auburn Regional Medical Center will lay off all 827 of its workers Sept. 28 is just another sign that the South King County hospital is about to change hands.

Most of those workers are likely to be rehired by the hospital’s new owner, Tacoma’s MultiCare Health System.

MultiCare spokeswoman Marce Edwards said Auburn Regional workers have been invited to apply for jobs with MultiCare. The interview and screening process is taking place now in preparation for the switch, now set for Oct. 1.

MultiCare is buying Auburn Regional and its clinics in a $98 million deal from Universal Health Services Inc. Universal decided to sell the hospital in part because its an isolated outpost among the more than 100 hospitals and medical facilities it owns around the country.

MultiCare was looking for another South King County hospital to complement its network of clinics and hospitals in Pierce and King counties. MultiCare owns Tacoma General Hospital, Mary Bridge Children’s Medical Center and Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma and Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. The health system is building a new hospital at Covington in South King County.
