United Airlines signs options for 160 additional Boeing jets

United Airlines this week revealed options that could more than double its big order for Boeing 737s.

The Chicago-based airline said it has taken options on 100 Boeing 737 Max jets along with 60 737-900ERs. The 737 Max is the latest upgrade of the popular 737. It will enter commercial service in 2017. The 737-900ER is the largest of Boeing’s current family of 737 jets.

United earlier this month announced an order for 100 737 Max 9 jets along with 50 737-900ERs. It didn’t reveal its options then.

The order and options at list prices would be worth some $28 billion, but the prices airlines pay especially for such large orders is often far less.

The planes will be built in Boeing’s Renton plant.
