The Tacoma branch of a nationwide precast concrete manufacturing company is closing Aug. 31.

Hanson Pipe & Precast at 4601 S. Orchard St. blamed the slow economy for the plant’s closure. Twenty-workers are employed at the plant. The plant produced reinforced concrete pipe.

Hanson Building Products, the company’s parent, issued a brief statement on the closure.

“For economic reasons, Hanson Pipe & Precast has made the difficult decision to close its gravity pipe manufacturing facility in Tacoma at the end of August. We would like to thank our employees at the plant for their efforts and service. We also appreciate the support of our customers in the market,” said Mark Carpenter, senior vice president of Hanson Pipe & Precast, West.
