Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier is encountering problems with one of its main suppliers.
The company is bringing fabrication of the fuselage of its new airliner back inside the company, at least temporarily.
Bombardier new C-Series airliner is a competitor to Boeing’s 737 single-aisle jet. The Bombardier C-Series jets will seat from 110 to 149 passengers.
The problem is not unlike problems Boeing encountered with outsourcing major pieces of its new 787 Dreamliner to other production partners. Boeing ended up buying the South Carolina fabrication plants of two of those companies when they continued to lag behind schedule.
The 787 was delivered to its first customer more than three years late.
Aviation Week is reporting that Bombardier will build the first 10 or so fuselages for the new plane in its own Montreal factory instead of in the factory of its Chinese partner, Shenyang Aircraft Corp.
The components of those fuselages will still be built in China. And Bombardier contends it will eventually restore the work of assembling those parts to Shenyang.
The first of the series of aircraft, the CS100, is scheduled to fly by the end of this year with the first operating aircraft going to the launch customer at the end of next year.
But some aviation analysts are speculating that problems with the Chinese factory could delay the C-Series commercial debut, but the Canadian company has yet to say that the plane will be delayed.
