Gas prices continue falling steeply this week in the South Sound.

In the Tacoma area, for instance, average gas prices fell almost three cents a gallon since Sunday. Those prices have dropped 16.6 cents a gallon in the last week, according to The News Tribune’s Gas Deal Finder.

The average price of a gallon of unleaded in the Tacoma area was $4.105 a gallon Monday. That’s down from $4.271 a gallon a week ago and $4.185 a month ago.

More than a dozen stations in the Tacoma area are now selling regular for under $4 a gallon, and four of those are selling gas for less than $3.90.

The lowest price in the South Sound was at U.S. Gas at 10222 Martin Way E. in Thurston County where a gallon was selling for $3.87.

Average gas prices in Seattle were lingering at higher levels than in the South Sound. Average price for gas in Seattle Monday was $4.179. Statewide the average was $4.12.

Higher production at Washington refineries is one reason gas is going down in price as well as the declining price of crude oil.
