McLendon Hardware will enter the Tacoma market this summer.

The Renton-based chain currently counts six branches, with two – in Sumner and Puyallup – in Pierce County.

The new store will be at 1015 N. Pearl St., a site now occupied by Saar’s Marketplace. That store will close in June, and McLendon Hardware will open following remodeling, according to a Saar’s employee and confirmed Tuesday by Bruce Stevens, McLendon director of advertising and marketing..

Shawna Harrison, a clerk at the Pearl Street Saar’s, said other Saar’s locations will remain open, and that employees from the Pearl Street store will be transferred to other outlets in the area. In Pierce County, the company operates Marketplace stores in South Tacoma, Parkland and Lakewood.

Regarded for its neighborhood atmosphere, McLendon Hardware is also known for its annual free customer-appreciation breakfast.

Stevens said he would provide further details of the new store when the hardware chain takes possession of the property withing the next few months.

There has yet been no announcement concerning possible job openings at the new store, but the McLendon website does list several openings at other branches. Stevens said prospective employees for the Tacoma store were welcome to submit applications online.
