Tacoma-based MultiCare Health System’s newest facility, the 24,000-square-foot Covington emergency department, will hold a public open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The 19-treatment-room facility is the latest addition to MultiCare’s medical campus at 7700 S.E. 272nd St.

The emergency department will open to treat patients starting at 7 a.m. April 3. The emergency department will be open round-the-clock, seven days a week.

The open house this week will feature self-guided tours of the new facility as well as music, entertainment and family-friendly activities, MultiCare said in a news release.

Highlights include the Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder Drum Line, a juggler, a magician, face painting, a fire truck, a bouncy house, a Zumba demonstration from Auburn Valley YMCA, and musical entertainment provided by the Tahoma Jazz Band and Tahoma Marching Band.

“Having an emergency department in Covington will greatly improve the service and care for residents of southeast King County,” said Hugh Kodama, administrator for MultiCare Covington Medical Center. “We can take care of many of their needs right in our community, and patients will be connected to MultiCare’s network of specialists in King and Pierce counties.”

Features in the new emergency department include:

· A total of 19 treatment rooms, four of which are specialized for children, with a separate child-friendly waiting area.

· Advanced imaging services within the emergency department, including digital X-ray, CT and ultrasound, which will allow for faster diagnostic procedures.

· An ambulance bay large enough to handle four ambulances at a time.

“The existing urgent care at MultiCare Covington Clinic will remain. MultiCare currently sees about 30,000 patients each year at the Urgent Care. The new emergency department will be added to the services offered at the existing clinic. Having both an urgent care and an emergency department will enable the new medical center to care for all patients in the most efficient and appropriate settings,” the healthcare concern said.

The opening of the emergency department is the latest step in a phased development of the site. MultiCare is planning to build a 58-bed hospital there to complement the urgent care and emergency department services.
