Two cars should be available for hourly rent in about a week at downtown’s University of Washington Tacoma’s campus.
That’s the word from UWT spokeswoman Debby Abe, who responded to my question about timing after a recent school e-mail said Zipcars had arrived. Abe said one car was here and another is en route. Zipcar’s website says the cars will be available this fall, but offers no date. Abe said the school understood they’d be available by next Wednesday, the first day of classes.
Zipcar works like this: You apply for a membership, reserve a time and a car at an hourly rate, then use a Zipcard to unlock the car at the pickup and return spot. Gas and insurance are included. Students of participating schools get a discounted rate, but anyone can join and use the cars.
Two Zipcars each have been operating at the University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University for about a year. The addition of the UWT cars is a big addition to alternate modes of transportation in downtown Tacoma and the South Sound region.
Abe said the UWT Zipcars will be parked at the campus’s Cragle parking lot, at South 21st and C streets.
