Pierce County unemployment rate in August almost 10 percent

The unemployment rate in Pierce and Thurston counties rose again in August, according to data released this afternoon.

State economists reported Pierce County unemployment at 9.9 percent, which is a full percentage point higher than the state’s 8.9 percent rate. Pierce’s rate also is higher than the same time a year ago, but not by much – 9.8 percent in August 2010.

Thurston County isn’t quite as bad, but it’s hardly good: 8.3 percent unemployment in August, up from 7.8 percent the month before and 8 percent the same time a year ago.

King County’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent from 8.7 percent last month and 8.5 percent a year ago.

County unemployment numbers aren’t adjusted for normal seasonal fluctuations in the job market, therefore the rates show more change. Using seasonally adjusted figures, statewide unemployment has held steady at 9.3 percent in July and August after dropping from 9.4 percent in June.
