The Port of Tacoma celebrated the arrival of the millionth Kia automobile at port docks Thursday.

The car was an Optima Hybrid sedan imported by the Korean automaker for sale in the U.S.

Auto imports are one of the bright spots in the port’s business profile this year even as the bread-and-butter container business struggles.

Auto imports are up 26.3 percent in the first six months of this year compared with 2010’s first half.

Kia imported its first car at the port in 1995. Those cars are processed by Auto Warehousing Co., North America’s largest auto processing company. The company handles more than 3 million cars a year at 20 locations throughout North America.

Auto Warehousing employs some 200 workers in Tacoma. It has its headquarters here.
