Airlines raising fares again in test of market reaction

Even as gas prices continue to fall, airline fares are once more on the rise.

Several major U.S. airlines raised fares from $4 to $10 per segment today in a test of market reaction to higher fare levels.

United and Continental airlines and Delta Air Lines, the nation’s largest imposed the increases this afternoon.

If other major air carriers follow suit, the fares will stick. If they don’t, the three large carriers are likely to rescind the fares.

The fare increases were the first attempts in several weeks after airlines made 10 attempts in the first months of this year to boost fares. Several of those attempts succeeded.

The airlines said the fare increases in the first half of the year were designed to counter fuel price increases.
