Toray employees lend helping hands to community projects

Some 120 employees of Frederickson’s Toray Composites America, this week are taking a break from their usual production jobs to lend a hand in the community.

Toray, a major Boeing Co. supplier, makes composite tape for use as the raw building material for components of Boeing commercial airliners including the 777 and the 787 Dreamliner.

The Japanese-owned company’s Frederickson plant has already met its production goals for the first half of the year, said spokeswoman Stefanie Randolph, which allowed the company to divert volunteer workers to community projects this week.

Those workers, who are being paid their normal wages to work on the charitable projects, are performing landscaping, clean-up and repairs at four local non-profit facilities and public sites.

For instance, 35 Toray workers worked with Citizens for a Healthy Bay to clean up Squally and Skookum beaches on Tuesday. Some 30 Toray employees are cleaning, painting and landscaping the Nisqually Valley Care Center in McKenna. About three dozen workers are working on landscaping at the Jessie Dyslin Ranch. Ten workers are assisting the Puyallup Valley YMCA to repair and paint this week.

The Toray program is also raising money for Parent to Parent, a local program assisting families with children with special needs. Toray volunteers are cleaning and washing other employees’ cars at work and donating the proceeds to program.
