More evidence that WinCo is coming to Tacoma

There’s new evidence that discount grocery WinCo Foods may soon be opening a Tacoma store.

A new Washington liquor license application lists Winco Foods LLC applying for a beer and wine license for a new store at 1913 S. 72nd St.

That’s the same site we wrote about in November. Its the site of a former furniture store in the Tacoma Place shopping center.

WinCo itself isn’t yet talking publicly about the new store, and it has yet to post job openings for the new business.

Since it was built in the 1980s, the 103,000-square-foot structure has been a building products superstore and, most recently, a home furnishings mart. The size is a bit larger than the typical WinCo store. Those stores average 94,000 square feet, according to company data.

The employee-owned, Boise-based company opened two Puget Sound-area stores in November, in Lacey and in Everett, bringing the number of Washington WinCo stores to 16. In the South Sound, WinCo has stores in Kent, Federal Way, Sumner, Puyallup and Lacey.

In six Western states, WinCo operates 78 stores.

About time we had a decent grocery store that had good prices. So long, QFC, Saars, Safeway.
