United, Delta post airfare hikes; others follow

The nation’s two largest airlines, Delta and United, have posted airfare hikes ranging from $2 each way on trips under 500 miles to $10 each way for long trips over 1,500 miles.

If the fare increases stick — already Continental, US Airways and American have matched them — the increases will be the second successful round of increases this year.

FareCompare.com notes that Frontier Airlines announced a winter sale at the same time the majors were upping list prices, but the fare-tracking Website said such limited seat sales are not uncommon even during a round of industry hikes.

The fare increases as legacy airlines are announcing renewed profitability in the fourth quarter and for 2010.
