Kathleen Deakins will become only the third president in the 40-year history of Tacoma communications consultancy and advertising agency JayRay following the retirement, at the end of this month, of Kurt Jacobson.

Deakins joined JayRay in 1987 to lead the agency’s public relations efforts. In the years since, she has been responsible for award-winning advertising campaigns, as well as public relations and strategic communications efforts, according to a release this week.

“Challenging, invigorating – whatever you call it – this is a great time to be in our business,” Deakins said. “Our clients understand that smart thinking and breakout creativity can be game-changers, especially when budgets are tight. “

Deakins earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Puget Sound and MBA from the University of Washington. She has her APR accreditation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and chairs the advisory board of the University of Washington Tacoma.

As president, Deakins will manage the business with JayRay owners Jerry McLaughlin and Shari Campbell.
