Pilots at regional carrier Horizon Air announced today they’ve agreed to a new 5-year-contract with the SeaTac-based airline.

The contract acceptance follows more than four years of negotiation. The contract was approved by the membership by 60 percent of those voting..

The pilots represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters APA Local 1224, said the new contract includes “dramatic improvements in work conditions where the pilots will be writing their own schedules and trips.”

Wage rates will be determined in an arbitration process. “Significant ratification bonuses” also were included in the agreement, the union said.

“We look forward to implementing this new contract, especially the scheduling portion” said Horizon captain Trevor Bulger. “The scheduling section in and of itself is a major industry improvement in that our pilots now have the ability to essentially build their own schedules. We envision this will provide for a vast improvement in our quality of life.”

Horizon is owned by Alaska Air Group, which also owns Alaska Airlines.
