Vietnam Airlines has switched its orders for Boeing 787 Dreamliners to a larger version than it originally ordered.
Flightglobal.com reported today that the airline has told Boeing it wants the larger 787-9 instead of the 787-8s it originally ordered in 2005. Boeing will deliver the first of the 787-8s late this year, but has yet to start building the 787-9. The 787-9 seats about 40 more passengers than the 787-8 and has a longer range.
The airline said the 787-8 no longer meets its needs because of range shortfalls. The airline has ordered eight of the aircraft and plans to lease eight more. The substitution of the -9s for the -8s means an additional delay in the delivery of the aircraft to Vietnam.
The airline will now get its first 787-9 in 2015.
