Boeing lands big order from Australian airline

Boeing has landed its biggest airliner order in 18 months.

Australian budget airline Virgin Blue has placed firm orders for 50 Boeing 737-800s and secured options and purchase rights for 55 more of the Renton-built aircraft.

The planes will be delivered to the Australian airline beginning in mid-year 2011 through 2017. The airline has the option of converting the orders for the 737-800 to the larger 737-900ER or the smaller 737-700 if those planes better suit its needs.

The order is seen by airline observers as a sign of economic recovery.

The new order could also help Boeing decide to increase production at its Renton plant from the present 31 planes a month to a higher figure. Boeing rival Airbus has already announced an increase in the production pace of its A320 line of aircraft, direct competitors to the Boeing 737.
