The three biggest public safety issues for 2014

Now that the goose is cooked and eaten, the tree trimmed and recycled, the presents bought and returned, it’s time to get back into work mode. With the new year already almost a week gone, it is well past time to discuss the important issues in public safety that will have the most effect on us – both locally and nationally – in 2014.

About last week…

When the sun came out last week, I was sifting through several interesting news stories for a topic. Let’s just say I got distracted. Now that I’m somewhat back on track, let’s take a look at a few.


Early in the week we learned that  an Italian court had ordered Amanda Knox’ murder case reopened (Trib 3/26). Though not unexpected, the judicial quicksand into which Knox stepped after being implicated in the death of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, continues to tug on her. Plenty of gun violence at home and abroad

Whether you were reading the local or world news, it was a nasty weekend for gun violence.

Most recent was the domestic violence-related shooting at the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, which happened Sunday morning at 1:30AM and left seven people wounded. Backing up ten hours from that point, at least a dozen people were shot during a car show in Kent on Saturday afternoon. And in perhaps the unlikeliest corner of the world to experience gun violence, residents of Oslo experienced a Friday that will surely stain the Norwegian psyche for years to come.
