Question for you, Tacoma: have you ever heard of Vicci Martinez?
I hope so. If you’ve been paying attention to the local music scene, you would recognize her name and voice as a regular at many of our more established clubs. Despite her youth, Martinez seems to have dedicated herself to her craft in a way few have matched. And her latest venture as a contestant on NBC’s talent show, “The Voice” has finally put Tacoma on the map for something other than crime.
If you haven’t heard Vicci sing, check her out on this youtube clip from her performance on “The Voice.” This may be way beyond my expertise, but I can’t help but admire the gutsy andn spirited performance by this young woman who seems to personify the essence of Tacoma.
Martinez represents the City of Destiny in a way that only those of us who live in this area can appreciate. The soulfully deep vocals and gritty lyrics that blast out of this small package are a smack upside the head to the taller, more pre-packaged variety of performers that might come from, oh let’s say, Seattle.
But this isn’t about the rivalry between T-town and the Emerald City.
Martinez’ story is about recognizing the beauty within oneself; it is about nurturing the qualities that makes one stand apart; it is about refusing to compromise one’s assets in a vain attempt to make them more palatable to a mass audience.
Okay, maybe it is about the rivalry between cities, but only as a measure of understanding the absolute need some people (and some cities) have to follow their own path. Truly, believing in oneself can and will make any victory all that much sweeter.
Regardless of the outcome of the musical contest played out on “The Voice,” Vicci Martinez has already won.
