TCC literature teacher wins sonnet prize

Richard Wakefield, long-time literature instructor at Tacoma Community College, is the winner of  this year’s Howard Nemerov Sonnet Competition. The competition is an annual event established in 1994 by former poetry journal “The Formalist” , and carries a $1,000 cash prize. 

Wakefield’s winning sonnet “Petrarch,” a Petrarchan sonnet commenting on that Renaissance poet from a 21st-century perspective, was chosen from around 3,000 entries, and will be published in the magazine “Measure.” 

Wakefield, a graduate of the University of Washington and former literary critic at the Seattle Times, has taught English literature classes at Tacoma Community College for 25 years, also serving as an adjunct faculty member at
