Mixed-media cleverness from Nola Tresslar at Flow gallery, Tacoma

Since it opened, Flow gallery on Puyallup Avenue in Tacoma’s Dome district has devoted a lot of space to creative extensions of sumi-e brush painting, and the latest show “Full Spectrum”  – vibrant, mixed media work by Nola Tresslar – follows the theme.

Apart from the straight sumi-e, however, Tresslar’s work is as much a fascinating “how did she do it” puzzle as art. The artist uses a lot of recycled and found materials, but transforms them almost beyond recognition: cheap packing paper hardened into metallic chain mail, foam filler gilded and sculpted into encaustic-like bubbles, patinaed copper and rusted

Fircrest artist’s 9/11 artwork still up at Lt. Governor’s Office in Oly

Fircrest artist Nola Tresslar has a show up at the Lieutenant Governor’s office that’s worth a peek if you’re down in Olympia. Tresslar, who works in a variety of media, has 14 pieces up, five of which are inspired by the artist’s emotions on the anniversary of 9/11.

The Lieutenant Governor, by the way, is the President of the Washington State Senate, and steps in as Governor when the real one is off-duty. Brad Owen is the current Lt. New shows in Gig Harbor, Puyallup and Tacoma

 

Three new shows by local artists are up this weekend in alternative venues: a Gig Harbor café, the Puyallup City Hall and Tacoma municipal buildings.

Painter Donna Carver, recently arrived in Gig Harbor from California, is opening “A Moment in Time” at Cutters Point Uptown in Gig Harbor. Carver portrays an emotional response to the rich colors of Pacific seascapes.
