Australian artist Tom Rowney will be working in the Museum of Glass’s Hot Shop July 24-28. The visiting artist residency concludes with a lecture at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 28.
Rowney uses Venetian techniques with a contemporary viewpoint to create precise geometric forms and graphic lines.
Currently on view at MOG are pieces from Rowney’s Maelstrom series – part of the exhibition, “Links: Australian Glass and the Pacific Northwest.” The exhibit is up until January 2014.

The Maelstrom series narrates the water-like qualities of glass while exploring the relationship between the medium’s solid and molten states. Rowney also uses Venetian caneworking throughout the series to maintain strong geometric line while referencing the swirling effects of flowing water. Of the pieces from his Maelstrom series, Rowney states, “Each form has its own memory of liquid water; a drip, a drop, a splash.”
Tom Rowney began his career as a trainee at Budgeree Glass Factory with fellow Australian glass artist, Nick Mount. He then went on to receive his undergraduate degree in glass from Australian National University Canberra School of Art. Following his graduation, Tom Rowney briefly worked at the Denizen Glass Studio before working as a glass artist and hot glass assistant at Benjamin Edols and Kathy Elliot’s studio in Brookvale, Australia. Tom Rowney’s career has also been marked by numerous teaching opportunities at such premiere institutions as Pilchuck Glass
School in Stanwood, WA, Vetroricerca Glas and Modern in Bolzano, Italy, and Canberra School of Art, in Canberra, ACT. Tom Rowney currently resides in New South Wales and has worked as the technical manager at Canberra Glassworks since 2006.
