Barefoot Collective heading for Theatre on the Square – and raising funds online to do it

The Barefoot Collective, which for many years has operated out of small or shared spaces, and for the last 18 months out of temporary Spaceworks sites, is planning a professional show on the Theatre on the Square stage on Broadway. To get there, the Tacoma contemporary dance collective is raising community funds through online campaign site indiegogo.com.

It’s an unusual move for The Barefoot Collective. The company was formed several years ago as an alternative dance ensemble, creating works collaboratively and utilizing unusual spaces such as commercial lofts or light rail stops. For a year it shared space with the Tacoma City Ballet, and for the past year and a half has been performing in vacant buildings courtesy of the non-profit Spaceworks program, as well as libraries, restaurants and businesses, often creating site-specific work for the locations.

Now, though, they’re bringing that off-beat creativity to a conventional stage with full-length program “The Ides of May” on May 11, through the Broadway Center for Performing Arts, which rents out the theaters.

Supporters are asked to visit the indiegogo page to pledge a dollar figure for the project.
