Calling all filmmakers, of any age! The Tacoma Public Library is joining in the annual national 90-second Newbery Film Competition and Festival this year, asking for submissions of films that tell the story of a Newbery medal or honor book in just 90 seconds, with screenings of the best videos on February 23.

Anyone can make a film – adult or child –with the only rule being that it needs to tell the complete story of a Newbery winning or nominated book (not just a trailer) in a ridiculously short 90 seconds or under. Submissions are posted as YouTube videos, and the best will be chosen to be screened in the festival in New York, Chicago, Portland and now Tacoma, with the local festival emceed by author (and lead singer of kindie pop band The Board of Education) James Kennedy.

The Newbery Medal is the biggest award in American children’s literature, presented annually.

The library is also offering free video-making workshops in advance of the deadline of  February 9.

Films should be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo, with link sent to kennedyjames@gmail.com and kgale@tacomapubliclibary.org with subject line “90 second Newbery.” Deadline Feb. 9. No entrance fee.
