Tacoma’s Poet Laureateship isn’t just laurels and glory – the position, supported by Tacoma’s Arts Commission, entails giving workshops and otherwise encouraging poetry in our community. One of those workshops is coming up this weekend. Current poet laureate Josie Emmons Turner will host a free poetry writing and critique workshop 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the University of Puget Sound.

Participants will have the opportunity to examine their own and others’ poetry from the reader’s perspective, with constructive feedback. Emmons Turner, a published poet with an MFA in Creative Writing from Pacific Lutheran University, will also offer technical advice on the writing process.

But you’d better get going. The deadline for submitting your poem for personal critique is today. The first 15 applicants will have their poem accepted for the workshop. Email three samples of your work and a brief description of your writing experience to josie.turner.poet@gmail.com. You can also just attend and listen.

9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 3. Free. Room 313, Wyatt Hall, University of Puget Sound, 1500 N. Warner St., Tacoma. www.tacomaculture.org/arts/PoetLaureate.asp
