Despite the low economy, granting body ArtsFund announced today that it was awarding $2.36 million to 60 King and Pierce County arts groups in its latest round of funding. These groups include long-term charter members such as the Broadway Center and Tacoma Art Museum, as well as continuing members and special grants for a total of $1,776,500 to Pierce County groups.

ArtsFund, the region’s central funding body for the arts, makes annual grants to local non-profit arts groups, most of which achieve member status by longevity and consistency of programming. Among this year’s Pierce County fundees are the Broadway Center for Performing Arts, the Northwest Sinfonietta, Tacoma Art  Museum, Tacoma Opera, the Tacoma Symphony, the Museum of Glass and Tacoma Musical Playhouse. A special grant of $7,500 was awarded to Tacoma Art Museum for programming.

“Arts groups continue to do excellent work amidst the new normal of an uncertain economy,” said Mari Horita, ArtsFund president and CEO. “(They) pump revenue by creating jobs, purchasing goods and services and drawing tourism. The arts are not just a nice-to-have; they are an essential part of a strong local economy and a vibrant community.”
