The Tacoma Arts Commission is looking for new members who are knowledgeable and passionate about the arts in a call for applicants ending May 31. A body of 15 volunteers, the commission advises the City Council on arts-related projects, allocates cultural funding, oversees the municipal art program (the one per cent of public spending devoted to art) and support programs such as Art at Work Month and the Tacoma Murals Project.

Commission meetings are held 5 p.m. on second Mondays. Members serve three-year terms and are recommended for appointment by the Council Appointments Committee and confirmed by the City Council. The Tacoma Arts Commission is especially interested in applicants who live in under-represented parts of the City and bring diversity to the group.

To apply, contact Cindy DeGrosse, Mayor’s Office, at 253-594-7848 or visit www.cityoftacoma.org/cbcapplication and apply by May 31. More information: tacomaculture.org, click on “The Arts”.

OK, we’re all waiting to learn which areas of Tacoma are “under represented” and which colors of people do they need to achieve “diversity?” Do we need more Congolese from the North End, more Iranians from Central District, more Brazilians from the East side…or what?
