Early music fans, rejoice: Tacoma’s about to be gifted with not one but five concerts by the Salish Sea Festival, a locally-based group of period-instrument musicians playing music from the renaissance, baroque and early classical periods at two Tacoma churches: Christ Episcopal and Grace Lutheran.

The first is next Tuesday evening, January 17, at Christ Episcopal. “The Sun King’s Music” combines Jeffrey Cohan on baroque flute, John Lenti on baroque guitar and Joanna Blendulf on viola da gamba and pardessus de viole (a 17^th-century soprano gamba played upright on the lap) to perform music from the court of Louis XIV of France. Music includes that by court gambist Marin Marais and guitarist Robert de Visée; instruments include a flute copied on a model by Jacques Hotteterre with a pitch more than two half-tones below modern.

“The Sun King’s Music” will be repeated at venues around Puget Sound, including Seattle and Vashon Island.

Then the chamber group travels to the Renaissance: Lenti (on lute) and Cohan (on various flutes) will be joined by violinist Shula Kleinerman to play broken consort music from the 16^th century at Grace Lutheran Church on February 8.

John Lenti is the associate director of the Seattle Baroque Orchestra and plays regularly for early music groups around the country. Jeffrey Cohan, artistic director of the Salish Sea Festival, is a transverse flute specialist who has performed as soloist in 25 countries around the world. Joanna Blendulf is a viola da gambist who performs with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, the Oregon Bach Festival and more.

Upcoming concerts include music from the Bach family (Feb. 29), early classical chamber music (April 17) and music by Wilhemine, sister to Frederick the Great of Prussia (May 15).
