Tacoma Little Theatre starts spelling

TLT opens its season with “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” the Tony-winning musical about six nerdy teens (played by adults) competing for the world’s wackiest spelling competition. Opens today; 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays Sept. 2-25. $15-$25. Tacoma Little Theatre, 210 N. I St., Tacoma. 253-272-2481, www.tacomalittletheatre.com

Eco-art on Vashon

Join artist and UWT professor Beverly Naidus for the opening of her eco-art project “Eden Reframed” on Vashon Island. Combining permaculture principles like a food forest and soil improvement with interactive sculptural story “hives” and a community dream-fence, the project opens this weekend with a ceremony led by tribal elder and herbalist Warren Gohl and musician Amy Denio. 5-7 p.m. Sept. 3. Free, potluck dinner.

Burton Adventure Recreation Center (BARC, former skate park), 10500 SW 228th St., Vashon. www.vashonparkdistrict.org

Book art at UPS Collins Library

Up now at the University of Puget Sound’s Collins Memorial Library is “William Morris and the Art of the Book: The Private Library of Jack Walsdorf,” with examples of the 19-century English designer’s intricate, nature-based prints. 7:30 a.m.-12 a.m. Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 a.m. Sunday through Oct. 14. Free. UPS campus, 1500 N. Warner St., Tacoma. 253-879-3669, www.pugetsound.edu
