Tacoma Music Teachers’ Association presents 18th annual student orchestral recital

Music teachers work just as hard as school teachers, and every year the Tacoma chapter of the Washington State Music Teachers’ Association works to organize an orchestral recital concert series for piano students. It’s a chance for music students to play as soloist with a chamber orchestra without having a stressful competition: It’s an adrenaline kick, plus a big learning opportunity.

It’s also a free concert series for the public, a good chance to take your own kids to be inspired to learn, and to hear some new music yourself.

This year’s recital series is spread over five days and two venues, and features 80 piano students playing everything from easy concerti to works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. The orchestra is made up of college and high school students, and conducted by Pierce College faculty member Evin Lambert.

New this year are two world premieres by Tacoma composers: Deborah Anderson’s “Follow Me” for piano, strings and two woodwinds (May 22-23), and “Concertino for the Young” by Dan Tacke for piano, strings, trumpet and timpani (May 26).
