A few weeks ago I wrote a profile of a Seattle-based flamenco dancer, Savannah Fuentes, who has been bringing herself and international flamenco musicians to the New Frontier Lounge, of all places, as well as up and down Puget Sound cities. I wrote that Tacoma isn’t known for flamenco, and that’s true, but if I implied that it doesn’t have any, then I certainly didn’t mean to. Marisela Fleites has been teaching flamenco with Metro Parks and Washington Contemporary Ballet, as well as performing with her company Tacoma Flamenca, for a number of years now, and the company has a flamenco concert coming up this weekend at WCB.

Fleites is an accomplished flamenco dancer who has performed for 25 years in America, Cuba and Spain. The performance, entitled “Tablao y cuadro flamenco,” is a tribute to former WCB director and founder Kay Englert.

It also comes at a time when WCB is struggling to stay upright. The school offers classes for children and adults in ballet, modern dance, musical theater dance, jazz, tap and flamenco, as well as summer camps, and mounts spring repertory and “Nutcracker” performances each year. But recent times have been hard, with declining tuition income, donations and ticket sales. Half of a $20,000 debt was recently paid off thanks to a successful fundraiser; the other half needs to be paid by July, and director Ken Kaiser is confident it can be done.

“We’re fighting the same battles as everyone else in the non-profit world,” says Kaiser. “We’re always looking for help. But we’ve got a plan in place, and we’re going to come out ahead.”

If you want to see the show, though, you’ll have to hurry. There are, as of today, only 50 tickets left.

Tacoma Flamenca performs at 8 p.m. April 30. $15/$10/free for 12 and under. Washington Contemporary Ballet Studio, 4020 S. 56th St. Suite 105, Tacoma.
